Police in Russia say four gunmen stormed the parliament in the southern republic of Chechnya on Tuesday, taking hostages and killing at least three people.

Officials said all of the attackers have been killed, after a 20-minute operation by security forces to retake control of the building in Grozny.

Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov told Russia＇s Interfax news agency that none of the deputies inside parliament were hurt in the attack.

Chechnya is part of Russia＇s troubled North Caucasus, which has for years been plagued by violence linked to Islamist separatists.

Russia has fought two wars in recent years against insurgents in Chechnya.  Major fighting in Chechnya has subsided, but attacks on government targets continue daily and violence has spilled over into Dagestan and Ingushetia, which borders Chechnya on the north.
