“Mayor, we don’t want to watch the Broadway show, or go to restaurant, we just want the roads be cleaned, so we can go to work.” City councilors in Queens rallied on Dec 28, protesting the government didn’t handle the snow storm properly and didn’t clean the snow cover on roads, requesting to clean all streets immediately.

The snow storm stopped on the morning of Dec 27, but in Queens district, snow in many small roads still didn’t get cleaned and brought huge inconvenience to residents’ life, some seriously ill patients were even dead because of delayed arrival of ambulance. What made city councilors angry was the DSNY transferred personnel in Queens and other districts to Manhattan to clean up snow cover there.

City councilors claimed that, though the snow was heavy, storms like this are not unique in NY history, and improper handling of snow never happen like this. The municipal government already knew the extent of the snow, but didn’t prepare in advance, and didn’t announce a state of emergency in time, but asked people to go to Broadway and restaurants. City councilors criticized, “Mayor, do you live on another planet?”

City councilor Gu,Yaming said, medical institutes like flushing hospitals, Flushing Manor Geriatric Center and rehabilitation center in Long Island all expressed ambulances could not deliver patients in time because of unclean snow cover. He said: “If I use this attitude to do business, I will close the business very soon.”

Gu,Yaming expressed that, his office received nearly 40 complaints for snow cover, they have already gathered relevant info and will track the handling situation besides submit to mayor’s office and DSNY.

Representative Meng,Shaowen’s office also received many complaints. Both claimed that if citizens have problem calling 311 or 911, their office can assist help, Gu,Yaming’s office number is (718) 888-8747, Meng,Shaowen’s office number is (718) 939-0195, e-mails can also be sent to mengg@assembly.state.ny.us.
