From 2-3PM, May 5th, 2011, Community Prevention Alternatives and some residents in Flushing held a memorial for Thomas Shanis who was slayed and killed at 140-18 Ash Avenue.
Thomas Shanis, age 32, lived at 140-18 Ash Avenue, Flushing was found slayed and killed at home in the early morning. The NYPD is still investigating on this case. The initial investigation showed that the murderers are two young drug addicts and dealers. The victim Thomas Shanis might also have a history of drug addiction. Community Prevention Alternatives’s organizer Ms. Martha Flores-Vazquez stated at the funeral that we are committed at preventing and opposing violence and our goal is to keep residents away from violence since violence harms victims directly and will pose physical and mental pains and impacts health and dignity. Violence might lead to casualties and even deaths and will give victims physical pains and mental disorder. Martha called on all residents to prevent, face and solve all violence related problems at all times to bring harmony back to this community. People showed deepest condolences and spoke to Thomas Shanis in tears and asked God’s sympathy and consideration of Thomas Shanis. Residents said goodbye to him and lit up candles. At the same time, residents asked the police to find the murderers as soon as possible.
Mr. Wang, Jun, chairman of China Democracy Party and propriety of China Democracy Journal attended the memorial as a regular resident in Flushing.
