Residents Around Protest that the Newly Built Apartment is Conjunct to the Old One in Flushing
In the afternoon of August 20, 2013, over ten apartment tenants in a building in 41st Ave, Flushing, NY protested outside the building. Without notifying all the tenants in the next building, the property developers started building a new building in the open space next to it. Once completed, one tenant’s restroom window and bedroom window in next building would completely blocked. New York community leaders Miss Martha (Martha Flores-Vazquez) organized residents to protest outside the building. The chairman of China Democracy Party and proprietor of China Democracy Journal lead part of China Democracy Party members to support this rally.
Under the leadership of community leader Miss Martha(Martha Flores-Vazquez, the tenant living in the apartment building numbered 143-40 cried out their voice, “ protest sealing window rudely!” “give back my air”. Protesters attracted many passersby.
Committee Chairman Norma Nino in Apartment building numbered 143-40 said, “We did not know that the propriety developer is going to build a building here until the construction began. And it would also block the window in restroom and bedroom, this is completely unacceptable. “
Epoch Times reported: according to some information, the propriety developer in No. 143-28 is Mr. Zheng, tailin who is in charge of Stern 88 Holdings. And Fuhua architectural firm is responsible for the construction. The plan is to build an eight -story apartment building. New York City Department of Buildings approved the construction of the site in May this year. However, the tenants in next building said that they never receive any notification. And they have no idea how the propriety developer get the permit. Once they know, it has already passed the 45 days period during which surrounding residents can report problems.
Epoch Times also reported: according to the notification copy Miss Martha got from propriety developer which was sent before the construction in No. 143-28, the recipient’s address is not the next building. Miss Martha said, if people can verify that the address is a wrong address, which leading to the fact that tenants next building messed this 45 day period, then we could request them to do all procedures again, and truly seek surrounding tenants' opinions.
A Chinese lady named Liang, Xinyi who has lived in the building for 7 years said, the propriety developer Zheng, Tailin took a lawyer here last week, and the lawyer threated us that if we do ot listen we would pay price. The lawyer’s tone is very unfriendly, and left no room for discussion. She also mentioned that she had the record of this conservation.
Another Chinese lady named Xuhua who has also lived here for 7 years. She said, all the tenants are very grateful to Miss Martha, since their complains to the 311 and the Housing Authority has not been responded yet. She said, there are old people and kids living in the side next to the new building , once the 4 windows blocked, it would be very harmful for their health. And the living condition would become very bad, who would accept this!
Lawyer from The People's Lawyer Neil V. Grimaldi was also invited to come to the scene, and he expressed that if tenants want to solve it in court, he would provide free legal aid.
