Egyptian Court Bans Al-Jazeera Affiliate, Pro-Islamist Channels

An Egyptian court has ordered four television channels to halt their broadcasts, including Al-Jazeera＇s local affiliate and a network belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood.

The administrative court ruling Tuesday includes the Ahrar 25 network operated by the Brotherhood, as well as the pro-Islamist Al-Quds and Al-Yarmuk channels.

Egyptian authorities have accused Al-Jazeera Mubasher Misr of being biased toward ousted president Mohamed Morsi, whom the military forced from office two months ago.

Last week, three government ministries issued a joint statement saying the channel spread rumors, "caused a wave of popular wrath," and posed a threat to Egyptian national security. The ministers said the network was also operating without the required licenses and permissions.
