Iraq Begins Offensive Against Al-Qaida

Iraqi officials say government forces and allied tribal militias have started an offensive to take back parts of a city west of Baghdad from al-Qaida-linked militants.

Officials said the forces moved Sunday into key neighborhoods of Ramadi, the capital of western Anbar province, located 100 kilometers west of the national capital. There are few details about the operation.

In Baghdad Saturday, authorities said four car bombings and mortar fire left at least 14 people dead and 50 others wounded. There is no word on who was responsible for the attacks in the capital.

Violence has escalated in Iraq over the past year. Tensions have soared since al-Qaida-linked militants and others seized the city of Fallujah in Anbar province, exploiting disagreements among minority Sunnis over the actions of the Shi＇ite-led government.

White House officials said Vice President Joe Biden spoke with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki Saturday to highlight the U.S. support for Iraq＇s fight in Anbar province against the terror group known as the Islamist State of Iraq and the Levant.

A statement said the two leaders agreed on the importance of Iraq＇s continued outreach to local and tribal leaders in the area.
