Seoul: North, South Korea to Hold High-Level Meeting

South Korea says it will hold rare high-level talks with North Korea, as the two sides prepare for reunions between families separated by the Korean War.

Seoul＇s Unification Ministry says the meeting will be held at the Panmunjom border village Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. local time.

Spokesman Kim Eui-do says a deputy national security advisor will lead the South Korean delegation and that the North will send veteran negotiator Won Dong Yon.

"Though an agenda has not been set before the meeting, the two sides are expected to discuss the major inter-Korean issues, including the smooth proceeding and the regularization of the family reunions," he said.

North and South Korea agreed last week to resume the reunions, which were last held in 2010. They are set for February 20-25, though there are concerns North Korea may pull out at the last minute, as it has done in the past.

Pyongyang already said last week it was forced to reconsider, just one day after reaching the deal. It has been pressuring Seoul and Washington to call off annual joint military drills that are scheduled to take place in late February.

North Korea views the military drills as preparation to invade. The U.S. and South Korea say the war games are defensive, were planned long in advance, and must go on as scheduled.
