Egypt Confirms Death Sentences for 183 Brotherhood Supporters

An Egyptian court has confirmed the death sentence for 183 Muslim Brotherhood members and supporters, including Mohamed Badie, the leader of the Islamist group - the party of ousted President Mohamed Morsi.

The court had originally sentenced 683 people to death on charges stemming from the attacking a police station in Minya province last year, the same day police killed hundreds of Morsi supporters during clashes in Cairo.  One police officer was killed in the violence. The death sentences from the speedy March trial by the military-installed government sparked an international outcry.

Thousands of Brotherhood members and supporters have been jailed in a crackdown on protests and dissent by security forces since the army toppled Egypt＇s first democratically-elected civilian president Morsi.

Saturday＇s sentencing came after the court＇s initial ruling was referred to the state＇s highest religious authority, the mufti - the first step towards imposing a death sentence.

Lawyers said Saturday that in addition to the 183 death sentences, four received life sentences and 496 were acquitted.

Badie faces a second death sentence in a separate case.
