Chinese consumers grow worried about the unhealthy additive ingredients in their daily food. This is reflected in a recent internet BBS posting about unethical pig feeding and the heated discussion it caused in internet forums across China.

This posting appeared in Xinhuanet on July 12 and had cumulative 4549 viewers. Xinhua closed this topic on July 13 after 100 comments were received. At the time it had been carried by number of forum discussion rooms and drawn heated discussion among the internet users. [1]

The title of the posting reads: "Alert! Eating Pork Equates Chronic Suicide". The posting entails a farmer from Sichuan Province revealing how it took her five months to raise 16 pigs from 20 pounds piglet to 350 pounds pig before they were sold to the meat distributors. The food the pig farmers used to feed the pigs was mixed in with additives which include heavy dosage of hormone, sleeping pills, and fertilizer such as Urea which is said to make the pig skin shiny. Her pigs sleep all day long except the meal time. They grew so quickly that they must be sold between 220 to 330 pounds or the pigs could barely standing on their feet. She disclosed that the pig farmers supply the pigs raised with additives only to the public market while the pork they eat at home would come from naturally raised pigs. She claims that adding additives is the only effective way that the farmers can sell the pigs and make profit.
