Yang, JianLi returned to Boston to reunite with his families
【 "YiBao" special edition August 20, 2007】Dr. Yang Jianli finally reunite with his families in Boston on Aug. 18, 07.
Yang JianLi, male, was born in 1963, native Shandongnese China, Christian. He graduated from Beijing Normal University＇s Department of Mathematics. In the 1980s he studied in the United States. In 1989 he went back to China to support TianAnMen Square Democratic Movement. He personally experienced and witnessed the "June 4" massacre, and had since then determined to join the Chinese Democratic Movement. He is also a representative figure of overseas Chinese students joining the democracy movement in China. He was China RUF Vice President, and therefore blacklisted by the Chinese authorities. Yang Jianli received Doctor degree in Mathematics from University of California, Berkeley in 1991 and Doctor degree of Political Economy from Harvard＇s Kennedy School of Economics in 2001. He is also the director of "21st Century China Foundation" and president of “YiBao”.
In order to study the labor movement in China, Yang JianLi made entry to BeiJing using his friend’s documents. During the time, he visited ShenYang, LiaoYang, WuShun, DaQing, Harbin and etc to investigate the protest of NorhthEast China workers. On April 26, before leaving the country while leaving KunMing to DaLi buying air tickets, he was arrested in KunMing on the charge of spying and illegal entrance. On May 23, 04 China sentenced Yang JianLi guilty and a 5 years term in prison with 1 year deprivation of political rights on the charge of spying and illegal entry.
Yang Jianli’s father immigrated to US in the 90s. After Yang JianLi was arrested in 2002, his father at the time over 90 years old decided to return China to rescue him. The old man was not able to see his son till his death in family house in ShanDong. The Chinese government denied Yang JianLi’s request of mourning his father. In Sep 2006 Chinese government once approved early release of Dr. Yang JianLi and directly sent him to the airport to US. However, Yang JianLi insisted on mourning his father at ShanDong first, a humane request which was denied by Beijing authorities. Yang JianLi was again sent back to prison.
On April 27, 07 Yang JianLi had finished his terms and was released. However, Chinese authorities refuse to give him his HuKou (Residency Registration), ID or passport for him to travel to US to reunite with his families. Yang’s wife Fu Xiang wrote to President Hu JinTao on July 26 requesting Yang JianLi being allowed to go back to US and reunite with families.
On the 17th this month, Yang was informed by Beijing that he could return US on the next day but barring him from giving any news release or meeting reporters at the airport to avoid further complication. On Aug. 18, 07 Yang JianLi was granted Chinese passport again and escorted by Beijing Public Security Staff to United Airline Flight 888 from Beijing to San Francisco, then change flight United Airline 8118 to Boston.
Yang JianLi was accompanied by first secretary of US Beijing Embassy Steve in his whole journey. Wife Fu Xiang welcomed him at the Boston Airport. Fu Xiang previously received notice from local senator office and related US government offices about Yang JianLi itinerary back to US.
Noted from other source Yang JianLi and his attorney will held press conference on Tuesday 21 August at Washington D.C. introducing his special experience of this five years prison as well as his experience of returning to US.
