Wei Jingsheng Gives Public Lecture at Northwestern University:
Reflecting on the Period from the 1978 Democracy Wall to the 1989 Democracy Movement in China
In recognition of the 20th Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Protests in 1989, Wei Jingsheng was invited to Northwestern University to give a public lecture about the Chinese democracy movement and Tiananmen Square on May 28, 2009. Despite that the visit was on a short notice of two days, more than 100 people attended. The large audience overflowed the classroom with many having to stand against the walls or even outside the hall. Besides students, there were also faculty and people from outside the campus in attendance.
Upon his arrival at Northwestern University, Wei Jingsheng attended a reception where he met and chatted with some faculty members. Later, he dined with the student leaders. After his formal lecture, the conversation continued into an evening reception.
Mr. Wei's 90 minute long lecture was composed of two parts. The first half was the formal lecture, while the second half was a Q&A session. In the first half, he reflected on the social and political background around the 1978 Democracy Wall movement as represented by the most famous essay "the Fifth Modernization - Democracy" that he penned in one night. Despite the destruction of that brick wall itself, the spirit of the Democracy Wall continued well into the 1980's until 1989. When Professor Fang Lizhi wrote an open letter to Deng XiaoPing calling for the release of Wei Jingsheng and other political prisoners, it started the 1989 democracy movement in China. Nevertheless, this democracy movement in China and the demonstrations all over China in places like Tiananmen Square were suppressed by the tanks and machine guns of the Chinese Communist government, causing the massacre of thousands of people.
Wei Jingsheng concluded with a discussion of the future of China. In 1989, although Deng XiaoPing successfully suppressed the democratic movement which could have changed the fate of China, the people of the former Soviet and East Block countries completed their revolution with the encouragement of the Beijing citizens. This revolution has changed the whole world. The bloody massacre in Tiananmen helped the Chinese people to realize the fact that it was the authoritarian nature of the Communist Party that made it unable to voluntarily give up power and to change with the demand of the society. The Chinese Communist Party is the biggest block against social progress in China. Nowadays China is not more China of 20 years ago. The Chinese people realize that they must rely on themselves to change China for the better toward a democratic society. For this change, they are willing to pay a huge price with their courage and wisdom.
In the Q&A session, Mr. Wei answered enthusiastic questions not just related to the 1978-1989 period, but also about the current and future China, especially the extreme disparity of the rich and poor that will ultimately trigger changes in China for social fairness and equal opportunity.
