Iraqi officials say a car bomb blast has killed at least six people, including two traffic police officers, in western Anbar province.

Authorities said Wednesday the attack targeted a police checkpoint in the provincial capital, Ramadi. Sixteen people were wounded in the explosion.

A doctor has told Reuters news agency the death toll may rise because many of the injured are in serious condition.

Iraq has seen several deadly attacks in the two weeks since U.S. combat troops withdrew from Iraqi cities.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Defense Department said it was changing the composition and mission of some troop units being deployed to Iraq, to reflect a new focus on supporting Iraqi troops.

The Pentagon also said there will be no major increase in U.S. troop levels, which now stand at 128,000.

A spokesman said four of seven brigades that will head to Iraq in the coming months will be designated as Advisory and Assistance Brigades, instead of Brigade Combat Teams.

He said the main difference will be the units＇ mission, which will focus on helping Iraqi forces. But the spokesman said U.S. troops being deployed will conduct counter-terrorism missions as necessary.
