North Pakistan Missile Strike Kills 13

Pakistani officials say at least 13 people are dead in a suspected U.S. missile attack on a militant hideout in Pakistan＇s North Waziristan region.

The officials say the strike, early Friday, destroyed a home in a village, Dande Darpa Khel, near the region＇s main town, Miranshah.

Security officials say women and children were among those killed. Some of the casualties were said to be Afghans.

The area is a stronghold of senior Afghan Taliban leader Jalaluddin Haqqani and his son Siraj, whose network is accused of carrying out attacks in neighboring Afghanistan.

A similar attack by a U.S. drone is believed to have killed Pakistani Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud on August 5, although Taliban spokesmen have repeatedly denied his death.

Shortly after Friday＇s strike, security officials say militants opened fire on a military checkpoint near Miranshah, wounding at least three soldiers.

Pakistan sealed its border with Afghanistan Thursday and put security forces on high alert to guard against attacks during Afghanistan＇s national elections.
