Xiaowei Liu：Improve the Environment of Speech Freedom in Chinese Society

On one hand, the Chinese government claims to give speech freedom to its people and let mass media speak as they want. On the other hand, the government uses the reason of eliminating internet crimes to control the mass media strictly and forbid its people from talking freely on the net, not ever to mention the dark sides of the government. This reality shows that the Chinese government speaks in one way but acts in the opposite way on the problems of speech freedom. The people actually have not much space for speech freedom.

In the so-called meetings of people representatives held by all levels of governments every year, the representatives are asked to give suggestions and ideas freely as they want. However, those representatives assigned by the governments only give compliments. They do not dare to speak any word on problems of corruption and negligence. Because of the long lasting absence of speech freedom, the people can merely present their opinions on the internet.

The autocratic system is the deep rooted reason for the corruption of Chinese government. Giving speech freedom to the people and allowing the net media to operate freely is beneficial to the development and progress of Chinese society. Therefore, to reform the unpleasant system is the first step to improve the environment of speech freedom in China.
