The 1.3 billion populations in China can only enjoy the press freedom on the surface of paper. The constitution gives all citizens the rights of speech freedom, publication freedom, supervision over national departments and government officials and rights to criticize government. All these commonly seen rights are merely put up to display instead of truly implement nowadays.

In China, not any private newspaper magazine or press can get newly established without the permission of the government, not either a privately operated broadcast or TV station. The so-called “speech and press freedom of citizens” is only a blabber.

The internet is barred because of some sensitive talks. Users of internet pay high price for defending the rights of speech freedom. The websites established and ran privately will be abruptly shut down for the reason of excessive talks or propagating sensitive information. There is no space to ask for the respect of the constitutionally protected freedom of speech and publication.

Dissents are arrested for implementing their rights of speech freedom. The government of China intentionally and cruelly closes down the press and media, limits so-called unfriendly authors and restricts scholars and citizens of other professions. Some sensitive people and famous dissents cannot get their books published. Even journalists are punished. No matter common employees of government or ordinary people will be inspected and arrested once they criticize the government publicly on net. Journalists and authors looking for press and publication freedom become victims of today’s political charges. They are sentenced for no legal reasons. Moreover, some journalists lose their jobs for reporting accidental events and secret news not favored by government, under the accusation of fabricating fake news.

Though journalists from foreign countries and districts of Hongkong, Macao and Taiwan have more freedom to report in China, they still have to face close monitoring and dangers in their work. The situation is no optimistic. Those people who pay high price for defending speech freedom witness the historical truth of how the CCP controlled government violently encroaches human rights and infringes citizens’ speech freedom.
