Dongfang Zhu: Reflection on “Incident 89”---- The Conspiracy in China’s Education
朱东方(Dongfang Zhu)
In the weekly collective discussion on Sunday, Josh told us three pieces of news, two bad and one good. He asked us which we preferred to hear first and we told him to choose as he like. He said that his father had cancer when his grandmother is also sent into hospital, and he got a job just because his father lost job and his mother had no work. We are shocked by the news and everyone try to comfort him by telling sadly stories. Sherry mentioned “Tiananmen Incident”. She said her generation will never forget the scene on June 4, 1989 that protesters without any weapon helplessly faced the armed soldiers.
The government wants to cover this history in China, which makes the people born after 1980s know little about the secret stories behind the historical incident and its significance and influence. The incident represented the negation of democracy, human rights and legislation made by China’s government. Meanwhile, it showed that when there are contradictions between the party and the people, the military is the weapon to protect the party instead of the people. Zhongnanhai was surrounded by guardians from the military during the incident. The education after incident 1989 is a tool to fool and enslave the young. High school students are overwhelmed by their study pressures and spend most of their time on studying and testing, sparing no time to get in touch with the real world outside. When they come out school, they are like prisoners in jail for years having no ideas of the society. After graduation from university, they can only try all they can to adjust to the society, not to mention having the courage to change, because they are already used to adjusting to rules. Besides, the ranks based on scores lead to the separation between students since the primary school. They only know how to compare with others and their value is founded on comparison. There are sayings that Chinese have servility, lack solidarity and obtain not any innovation in their minds. What are we to blame? It is absolutely the education to take the responsibility.
Why the education can’t transform? Because once the people are civilized, the social system will reform. The quality of today’s people is just appropriate for enslaver rule. The government is more than happy to keep it. Moreover, a revolution will involve the interest of many bureau groups which makes it full of difficulties.
Even one day the economy is not steady anymore and the society is never harmony, and a group of people lacking solidarity came out to require government reform, the government can still bring out the military again to control the situation, like what they did to Tibetans and Uighurs. The government can cut off internet connections, cell phone net and telephone web nationwide. People are encircled to be cleared. Government can easily place a unnamed crime on their heads and throw them into jail. Then the history is hidden and wiped out in the heads of Chinese people, after generations, no one will ever know what happened before.
Years after, Chinese people still have lower quality, because the education never changes. Generation after generation, young people have no personal thoughts, no solidarity and no social responsibility. Chinese people are still the cheapest workers in international markets and regarded as East Asian patients. The only difference is the illness is not physical anymore.
