Zhao Yang: Chinese Government Must Expand Its Investment on Education
杨昭(Zhao Yang)
China has more problems in education than any other country. Normally speaking, China is the country with the largest population in the world. It should have more education funds than other nations. As a matter of fact, the education funds in China are lesser than other country.
Many countries provide free education to their children. Some media reports that Myanmar, a nearby country to China which is extremely poor in comparison to China, never makes the country’s education in poverty.
We still clearly remember that on May 12, 2008, thousands of students were killed under the destructed classroom buildings in the earthquake. The fundamental cause is a lack of essential money for these rural schools. When they have no money to support education, what can the local governments do? The Chinese government demand local people to donate as a support to education, but remote areas like Wenchuan in Sichuan province is too poor to spare money. How can it be possible for them to construct classroom buildings? There is only one way: to cut down the necessary work. This is the most significant reason causing the collapse of classroom buildings in Wenchuan earthquake. It is also the consequence of the corruption in the Chinese society, in Chinese government and done by officials.
The compulsory education system in China allows thousands of children from poor family to accept education. However, the corruption in China’s education system blocks the limited amount of money from applying on the children in needs. The government of China aiming at catching up the international education level of the world has to not only reform the system and eliminate corruption, but also expand investment in primary education. This is a long and difficult path.
