Wenlong Wu: Stop Chinese Government from Restricting and Censoring the Internet

China is one of the countries which have the most censorship on internet. The government of China establishes a censoring system to restrict the internet. As a result, there exists discrimination over international web and online commerce on the internet of China, caused by the limitations and censorship done by the government. An open internet is an important part of international merchants and economy development. The restrictions prescribed by Chinese government on internet will damage international commerce significantly. Moreover, almost all industries will be influenced by the negative side of internet censorship, especially those using internet to connect with their clients.
Recent years, government of China has strengthened its control over internet and keeps on restricting internet, media and speech freedom. Internet users in China will confront with lots of blocks when they are trying to get information from the internet. Rights defenders and dissents have to go through many difficulties struggling to get the ideas of democracy and freedom promoted on the internet. Chinese government not only supervises the usage of internet, but also hires thousands of “Internet Police” to thoroughly monitor the internet. Information on net are strictly censored and infiltrated, so Chinese people can’t freely approach them. Meanwhile, internet users in China have no access to many foreign websites. The related companies and people at high positions are commanded by the government to cooperate with their censorship and supervision. All the internet users who dare to violate the so-called “Rules” prescribed by government will be seriously supervised, dealt, arrested or even sentenced.
A free and open internet has great effects on promoting world’s civilization and progress. International community has demanded effective initiatives to stop Chinese government from restricting and censoring the internet, so the internet can progress healthily.
