Hongzhen Zhao: The Government of China Must Open Up Press and Media

Government of China has strict control over media and a systematical censorship over press. The news reports face many kinds of limitations. Chinese people can’t enjoy deserving press and speech freedom. Moreover, government will censor people doing news reports such as journalists, editors and related workers. The contents of news have to go through levels of offices to be checked. The government tries all means to oppress differed ideas and voices. Many press employees can’t adjust to the situation well. In contemporary Chinese society, people can’t openly express thoughts and journalists can’t justly report, no matter it is on the newspapers, magazines, televisions, radios or internet.
The society of China experiences significant transformations at all aspects since the “Reform and Open Up”. However, the press and media still lack freedom. For many years, the situation just remains the same. Seen from nowadays, government of China never releases its control over media and press. That is to say, Chinese people can’t enjoy press freedom and many mass incidents are covered up by the government. Ordinary people have no access to the truth of all stories.
We hereby appeal sincerely that Chinese government must ameliorate media freedom environment as soon as possible. The media has to be opened comprehensively. If media has no freedom to report as they want, the speech freedom of Chinese people can’t be ameliorated as we expect.
