Xingyue Ye: City Construction Can’t Use the Sufferings of Lower-class People as Price

“2010 Shanghai World Expo” is opening up soon. The televisions are broadcasting the magnificent views of the spectacular World Expo Garden. However, watching these views makes me feel sorrow inside. Behind these lofty and luxuriant buildings are the tears and cries of families who suffer violent demolition.

In China, violent demolition is not news anymore. From metropolis to little towns, once the government makes the commands, the administrators can kick one after one family out of their lovely homes in name of supporting national construction. The words of the government are “National benefits are more than anything”. Could they trample the vital interests of ordinary people just for sake of the so-called “National benefits”? When people can’t enjoy their lives freely and benefit from the city life, all seemingly phenomenal constructions are meaningless. As a matter of fact, these large scale constructions are not aimed at serving residents in city. They are the facial projects for the men with power to show off their political achievements, or the products of their collusion with real estate businessmen.

The truly appropriate city construction should provide conditions for people to live happily, not create pains to them on the contrary. This simple principle is now twisted by the CCP authority. In their mind, protecting the interests of their regime is the foremost goal. The lives of lower-class people are not worthy of consideration. This social situation in China is so chilling.
