Yan, Lijun: Open Up Speech Freedom in Chinese Society
鄢立军(Yan, Lijun)
Though there are terms on speech freedom in the Constitution of China, those terms only stay on paper and are never truly implemented. That is to say, the real situation in China is that people have no speech freedom, media freedom and media freedom. The Chinese government makes energies to itself, which lead to the instability and a lack of harmony in Chinese society.
Why there is no speech freedom in China? Speech freedom is beneficial to the whole society, but Chinese government has to pay the price. Because the most sensitive speeches are on politics, those praising government don’t need any protection. Speeches calling for protection are those seeming unpleasant to government. Chinese government has to take the responsibility to decide if it could implement speech freedom.
The benefits of speech freedom can be expected in a long term. Autocracy can cheat people and satisfy their needs for a while, which means that its benefits are immediately seen. However, the disadvantages of autocracy will gradually accumulate. A society of democracy and freedom is just contrary to autocracy. Its unacceptable aspects might be sensed right away, but its advantages will become obvious in the long term.
In China, only positive reports can be heard. It seems the society is full of joys and peace. In a country with freedom, media will tell all truths to its people. A government trusting freedom will reveal dark side of a society. Therefore, protecting speech freedom calls for wisdom, vision and courage.
