Li, Li: The “Illegal Flower Offering” in China’s Society of “Freedom”
李莉(Li, Li)
On January 13 of 2010, Google claimed that if Chinese government doesn’t stop its censorship on search engine, Google will withdraw from China. At morning of that same day, many people came to Google’s head office in China and offered flowers to show their sympathy towards Google. However, the securities in Qinghua Technique Park (the location of Google China head office) regarded their actions as “illegal flower offering”. A new internet word---illegal flower offering---therefore came into being.
Google’s withdrawal from China and the consequent ridiculous saying of “illegal flower offering” are enough to prove what the so-called speech freedom and democratic country claimed by China Communist Party are really like. Google incident has shown the confrontations between democracy and autocracy, the two powers existing among world’s different countries. It also exposes Chinese government’s tyrant actions on oppressing speech freedom.
Google’s final retreat from China is a big loss to Chinese people who look forward to speech freedom. However, it’s revealing of Chinese government’s evil power, such as its depravation over people’s free information communication, is an unprecedented strike to the government. Whether if Google finally retreat from China or not, thousands of people in Chinese society are the most benefited part of society. It is thousands of people in Chinese society.
