Ma, Zijuan: Some Thoughts on Democracy
马自娟(Ma, Zijuan)
Democracy is considered a foreign word in eyes of many people. Perhaps, it is like potato that belongs to imported species. However, I never regard it as a concept included to political theory scale. I take it with a normal attitude as if it’s a daily seen phenomenon. There are plenty of articles on this aspect, but I have a feeling that whenever this matter is brought up, democracy is discussed under category of “higher building”. This is abstract and serious too. This gives people an opinion that democracy is remote to us as if it’s inapproachable. I think, “Tao” doesn’t alienate people, so does “democracy”. It lies in living habits, inner thoughts and quality of each of us. Democracy is not granted to us by any group and is doesn’t stand somewhere where waiting for us. The existence of democracy is our own business, that is to say, all depend on ourselves.
Democracy is never a simple election by voting. It’s not a form or system. It is whole population of a nation caring about destiny and future of their homelands. Democracy relates to all citizens. It requires we citizens as a whole to have a kind of attitude suitable for democracy. There is quality of democracy. People understand what true democracy means and democracy represents the coordination of rights and obligations. Democracy is not a mere piece of slogan, or only kind of enjoyment. Democracy is more of obligation and responsibility.
