Zhang, Chunxia: Key to Enviromental Protection Lies in Legislation and Enforcement
张春霞(Zhang,Chunxia)
Although China's economic development is fast and the living standard of the population also has increased to a certain extent, environmental damage is very alarming. Among polluted cities covered by the media around the world, there are several in China. In pursuit of economic efficiency, China's local governments allow to discharge untreated waste water and solid waste directly into nature, which results in air pollution, living environment pollution as well as lake and river pollution.
We only have one earth, which is the common homeland of human beings. Protecting the environment is the responsibility of mankind. China's environment has not been fundamentally improved. The problem lies in that China's environmental protection enforcement is not strict enough. Some government officials neglect their duty in environmental protection issues, and can be bought by money. They select fine to take the place of system.
As a result of deficiencies in China's current institution, environmental governance in China has almost become empty words. The Chinese Government should complete sound legislation and enforcement regarding environmental protection and really implement its duty in environmental protection as a big country.
