Zhang, Jiaqing: The Chinese Society Needs Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Press

The Chinese Government tries very hard to create a secure,harmonious and open surrounding in the international community. However, the current Chinese society is full of contradictions. The Chinese government brutally suppresses the common people’s awareness of human rights and rights protection. The Chinese people have no place to express their aspirations in pursuit of fundamental human rights and make their voice heard.
The Chinese people have lived in a surrounding in absence of freedom of expression for a long time. Most of them are short of basic understanding on the basic concepts of freedom of speech.Many of them still do not know in a democratic society, citizens can express their opinions freely. They even do not know news media in a democratic country can criticize the government and expose negative social issues.
After undergoing the Olympic Games and the Shanghai World Expo, the Chinese government should improve the environment for the press and freedom of expression. If the Chinese community enjoys more freedom in journalism and freedom of expression, the Chinese people would be able to obtain more information. However, the Communist government, like all dictators, is very afraid of mature people, fears of criticism from people and are more scared by resistance from the Chinese public. The Government does not want any change and hopes to continue maintaining a dictatorship.
