Li,Zhi: Thoughts on fire of residential building in Shanghai

On Nov 15, 2010, a teacher residence building in Jingan district, Shanghai was on fire, leading death toll of 58 people, more than 40 people were missing, and the main reason of the fire was renovating a building that didn’t need to be renovated by the Chinese government who wanted to cater to the World Expo, the surrounding protective nets were on fire during the renovation, as the protective nets are not fireproofing, fire quickly spread to the whole building, firemen didn’t get to there until 16 minutes later, due to obsolete fire-fighting equipment, squirt guns can only reach to the 6th floor, most floors can only wait for spontaneous combustion, the fire caused many people lost their relatives and homes, media under the control of CCP government could only report how the fire was under control in time, how brave were the fire fighters, how stable the mood of bereaved families, all of which were not in accord with the facts.
From the whole accident I thought about some questions: Firstly, the fire was totally caused by human factors, if CCP government is people’s government, it won’t do these “face projects” blindly but to do something practical, like increasing advanced firing equipments.
Secondly, the fire already caused many lives and homes, but we can only get processed news and not the true reports from CCP media, that is the most tragic thing for Chinese people.
From the fire we can see the CCP government is an irresponsible government, it doesn’t care people’s lives, and only concerns its international image, it use huge amounts of tax and duty to do things that have no connection with the public, the public have to pay for government’s bills. To stop such things from happening, we can only change the political system, implement the multi-party system, increase supervision for the governing party, do things from the people’s interests not the government’s interests, such government is the government that Chinese people need.
