Liu, Di: Why the Chinese people are unhappy?
刘荻 (Liu, Di)
People's Daily on March 23 carries an editorial: "Turmoil often is a wrong road in national development and easily led to people's tragedy". This article writes: “this spring, happiness becomes a hot topic of discussion. During two national meetings, how to achieve happiness, how to descript happiness get more pays attention.
Cheng Jing, a delegate of National People's Congress said: the first essential meaning of happiness should be a security sense. Only there are the national prosperous and powerful, and social stability, the common people then have the security sense, so that has the happiness. Indeed, there are many different ways to happiness, but any happiness way relies on a stable and hard foundation.
As the saying goes, people want anything which is short of .That happiness now is a hot topic never means that people is too much happiness, but because people lack happiness.
To discuss why the Chinese people are not happy, first of all, people should know how people become happiness. Maslow believed that the human’s needs have many levels, from low to high, there are need for survival, need for personal security, need for love and belong to, need for being respected, cognition, and need for self-realization.
From this viewpoint, we may have a look that if Chinese people’s needs have been satisfied in all need levels. Not to mention Qian Yunhui and Sun Zhigang, recent wave of eagerly buying food salt and a lot of arrest of political dissident has show that Chinese people’s need is far from being satisfied.
When The Chinese government strictly suppresses all kind of civil society organization and the NGO development organizations, can the Chinese people’s need for love be satisfied?
When the officials from the central government said that you people is worth nothing, can the Chinese people’s need for love be satisfied?
When Chinese government blocks many domestic and foreign websites, and when many overseas websites are not available to Chinese people, can Chinese people’s need for cognition be satisfied?
Finally and also is most important point is: the Chinese people cannot say freely what they want to say, cannot do the matter which they want to do, cannot achieve the goal by they own efforts. Therefore, Chinese certainly have any sense of happiness.
From this point we may see: the Chinese people obtain nothing but only the physiological needs are satisfied. All high-level needs cannot be satisfied, the Chinese people are certainly impossible to feel happiness.
People's Daily said: “the first part of happiness is a sense of security”. This saying is not wrong, but why the Chinese people lack the security sense? The massive printing bill by the government causes the huge inflation. In this situation, have Chinese people any sense of security?
If there are any kind of nature and man-made disaster in China, the government first thought is that blocks news and information, which make Chinese people has no any sense of security. A lot of political dissident are arrested and jailed, which also make Chinese people has no any sense of security.
Under the daylight, large quantities of police block the downtown area business street and beat foreign reporter, can this let the Chinese people has the security sense? The spokespeople of Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the law is not a shield for people; can this let the Chinese have the security sense? The Chinese people does not have the security sense, does not have the happy sense, and can government’s suppression bring happiness to Chinese people?
Chinese government’s behavior lets that world see China government in a terrified way, and moreover lets the people’s sense of insecurity and the anxious mood is more serious, finally erupts more huge.
From the psychology view, the more a neurosis patient hide own symptom, the more its symptom displays prominently; From the economic point, the more government uses resources for suppression of people, the less the people own wealth, and the heavier the people’s disappointment.
A society which people have no any sense of security had great possibility of social turmoil. Even the government can control situation, can this kind of social stability bring any happiness.
How and what should the government do can let that the people have the happy sense? The human needs are various and multi-level, and each person's values are different, therefore the government is impossible in behalf of people to pursue the so-called happiness, the only means were to reduce control, to let the people say freely what they want to say, do freely what they want to do, freely pursue their happiness, and the law should become each person's shield.
