Zheng, Libin: Looking forward to the 1st Chinese president to be selected by people
郑丽彬(Zheng,Libin)
As we all know, U.S is the role model of a democratic system. How is a U.S president selected? There are 2 major parties in U.S, the Democratic and the Republic. They each propose their selected President candidate. Then these 2 candidates have to promote their ideas on as much media as they can or even write a autobiography; they have to run around the country to meet the votes; do public speeches to describe their personal experience, family, campaign goals and blueprint for governing the country to impress the voters so they will vote for him/her. Before the final poll, they will have to face to face debates, live on TV to defend their own opinions. The party who wins the debate will have an obviously increasing number of voters and may finally win. On the day of the voting, voters will send out their vote. After all votes are counted, the candidate who wins will be announced. Government officials will be selected by the president. They will work hard to realize their campaign promises and improve the quality of people’s life; or on the next campaign in 4 years, their leader will not be selected again. The power of a U.S president will be restricted by the Senate. Senate holds the power of legislation. All the important government officials designated by the president, financial budgets, etc will have to be audited and approved by the House of Representatives and the Senate. The justice is also separate. Press and votes watch the words and behaviors of the president. If the president commits a crime, he/she will be impeached. What a great invention of the system which selects the president by people!
However, how is the highest level of Chinese leaders selected? He/she will be designated by the Communist’s leader directly, for example, Hu, Jintao and Xi, Jinping were authorized by Deng, Xiaoping. The highest level leaders in China were not selected. He/she might not be the most talented, and people don’t know about him or his ideas and goals. Since the leaders were not selected by people, they don’t care about people’s thoughts or listen to people’s complaints. His/her ruling goal is for the Communist Party, not for the benefits of all people. In recent years, there have been great accomplishments of China’s economic developments, but the quality of life hasn’t been improved obviously and many people are still struggling. The legislation and justice are not separate, but controlled by the Communist Party. There is no freedom in news and the media hasn’t opened up. There are no restrictions on highest level leaders’ power. This is very similar to the power owned by a king.
A president selected by people would be the lighthouse of democracy, lighting up a bright future. Many countries have broken through the power owned by a kin and applied the system of selecting the president. China should also follow with the trend and learn the experience from U.S so that everyone could have the right to vote, the 1st president would be selected by people and China would become a real free country.
