Zhang, Xiong: Direct elections can improve human rights in China
张熊(Zhang,Xiong)
The political rights of Chinese citizens are much worse than those of most other countries and don’t meet the generally accepted human rights standard. The human rights problem of China, a country with 1.3 billion people, is very serious. Since Chinese can’t select the form of government and government leaders by elections, Chinese can’t establish a political system that respects human rights, a legal system that protects human rights, and a judicial system that safeguards human rights; nor can they have freedom of speech, religion and association. This is the main reason why the human rights situation in China hasn’t been fundamentally improved in the long-term.
The key content of democratic reforms in China is to push forward the direct and free elections of all levels of government leaders and of members of people’s delegation on and/or above the level of County. Under this basis, open elections on all levels of government could be implemented so that Chinese people can elect the government and their preferred government officials. And therefore, human rights in China can be improved.
