Zhang, Mingzhi: Improving human rights can help China successfully hold Olympics
Chinese communist government needs Olympics, but not every Chinese needs Olympics. For China, what is urgently needed is political reforms, so that China can become democratic and that a elected and regulated government can be created. A regulated government will know how to deal with human rights issues. The key to hold 2008 Olympics is to improve and correctly solve the human rights issue in China.
China has the ability to hold Olympics; however, there will be no human rights if there is no democracy. An Olympics without human rights protection means to encourage and tolerate trampling human rights. As of today, Chinese government should copy and learn from the experience of democratic countries. When democracy, human rights, Olympics can be realized in 2008, in other words, democracy and human rights can be realized, the Olympics can be successfully held.
