Zheng, Libin: Reflections about the arrest of Ai, Weiwei
郑丽彬(Zheng,Libin)
Ai, Weiwei, the son of poet, Ai, Qing, is a writer and artist. He hates the officials and merchants’s deals. During the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, many school children were killed due to the poor quality school buildings. Ai, Weiwei showed sympathy for those families that lost their children and felt this unforgivable pain. He published articles criticizing the government’s bad behaviors. But Ai, Weiwei was punished for unstated reasons and arrested.
The arrest of Ai, Weiwei shows that the jurisdiction in China is still not independent. China is a country under dictatorship since citizens could be arrested at will. This shows that there is still no freedom of speech in China. Ai, Weiwei only stated the facts, but he was arrested by the government. The Chinese government deprived the rights of speech and violated human rights.
People living abroad should act aggressively, request release of Ai, Weiwei and work with media to give citizens sacred freedom of speech. Without freedom of speech, people can’t say the truth and can’t form a positive power to help develop the society. When there is no freedom of speech, no open media, and when the government can’t be monitored, the officials will be corruptive, and not fulfill their duties and there will be lots of unfairness in the society. When there is no freedom of speech, there will not be true equality for all people. Freedom of speech is an important aspect of human rights. All the developed and wealthy countries in the world are those there allow freedom of speech. Only when the Chinese people have the sacred right of freedom of speech, the Chinese people can live a wealthy life and the Chinese people can have democracy.
