Wang,Zhen:The situation of image projects in China
王贞(Wang,Zhen)
The recent fast development of China, especially the strong momentum as before in spite of the economic crisis brings wide attention of other countries. However, behind the prosperity, many hidden dangers and burning problems remain under cover. The common image projects are one of them.
China’s government officials, in particular local officials put too much emphasis on achievements and so-called image projects during their tenures, and ignore the real demands of the common people. For the safety of 08 Olympics, huge amounts of migrant workers in surrounding Beijing were drove off, civilian buildings near the Bird’s Nest did not allow people to stand on balconies, did not allow to open windows, implementation of traffic control and so on. The Asian Games in Guangzhou was the same, buying a kitchen knife needs I.D. card. In the interest of official reputation, the common people have to pay for it, which is neither reasonable nor legal.
There are many reasons for image projects: like officials’ mentality of craving for greatness and success; lack of guarantee for open supervision; improper notion of political achievements and so on. I think the politics and economy has to be separated in order to prevent image projects. Local governments should not be involved in attracting investments, but to create a good living environment to local people.
