Qiu, Gengmin: “Economic crime” is the new excuse of CCP’s persecuting dissidents

On Apr 3, 2011, Chinese artist, famous activist Ai, Weiwei was took away by frontier offense officials in Beijing Airport before getting on the plane. On April 7, Chinese authority said that Ai, Weiwei was under the investigation with “the suspicion of economic crime” for the first time. In the routine press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hong, Lei, the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in China, said China was a country of laws, it dealt with the case of Ai,Weiwei according to the laws and at the same time warned other countries have no right to interfere in this case. After five days of arresting Ai, Weiwei, Chinese authority labeled the crime of “economic crime” suddenly, and in term of the development of the event it was an erfundene crime; in fact it was political attack and persecution on Ai, Weiwei with a crime of “economic crime” at random. They didn’t dare to label the crime of “subvert regime” on Ai,Weiwei who had ranging influence, but they had to find a excuse, so they used the crime of “economic crime” to fade their persecution on Ai, Weiwei. They said “It’s sure that Ai, Weiwei commit the crime but we are investigating the crime, so give us some time and then we must find his accusation.”
On Jun 22, 2011, CCP released Ai, Weiwei under the pressure from International press, but in the next year, he was not allowed to leave Beijing, interviewed and tracked by plain-clothes men. Two months after he was arrested, in the evening of 22 he was released with the name of obtaining a guarantor pending trail. The external world thought, CCP authority released him just based on the political factors to leisure the internal and external pressure and take them down some wonderful roads of their illegal actions. They also took Ai, Weiwei as a chip to exchange for some pressure external or internal. They did it just because of political factors and it had become a discipline. Less than one week after Ai, Weiwei ’s obtaining a guarantor pending trail, he received the penalty notice from Beijing revenue department on Jun 27, with the notice said that he owed the tax of five million Yuan and he should pay the fine of seven million Yuan. They demanded him of paying the tax and fine to press him not to sound with the chip of economics.
In order to avoid the pressure of human rights, Chinese government used “economic crime” with wide meaning to replace “subvert regime” as a new excuse to suppress activists and supporters of free speeches and it damaged their reputation even sentenced them. Ai, Weiwei was a famous people, getting the support from International society. Without the support from International society, CCP authority could not release him at all. In China, there were so many ordinary people, looking forward to democracy and human rights. Chinese government persecuted them without any limitation. CCP took illegal measures to maintain their power, and even made dissidents disappear without order for attachment or procedure during trail.
During the period that I stayed in US, domestic policemen not only searched for my company with the excuse of economic problem, also suppressed my company together with other departments because I published some speeches about democracy. They didn’t allow my company to pass annual inspection, aliened the assets of the company unlawfully and accused me falsely. It caused my company, a big foreign exchange earning into an extremity, and even could not keep going.
Whatever CCP used the crime of “subvert the regime” before and the new excuse “economic crime”, its final aim is to suppress dissidents and maintain the autocratic rule. But thousands of conscientious Chinese people must be fearless of pressure, take up the positions of the fallen one after another and struggle for democratic career!
