Li, Su: Demand a Complete Freedom of Speech from the Chinese Government
李肃(Li,Su)
China, an autocratic system, mainly features that the common have no rights to freedom of speech. The Chinese government establishes many restriction orders for the public. Even though the country’s constitution stipulates that the people have the rights to freedom of speech, the act has never been realized. For years, the government has been sternly controlling the media and press. Neither individuals nor private sectors can own any media. All media vehicles including newspaper, Internet, radio stations, television stations are occupied by the government. All measures the government takes to control the media are extremely rigorous.
In today’s China, newspaper, magazine, broadcasting stations, television stations, and Internet are not at liberty to say what they like. Particularly, criticisms about the government and politics are not allowed to be published in public places. Anyone who disobeys the rule will be considered as a saboteur disrupting social stability and unity, and his speech will be regarded as one of endangering the state’s political power. What such saboteur maybe published are warnings, financial penalty, arrestment, or imprisonment.
Remarkable changes have been taken place in China’s economic development, but for freedom of speech, we can’t see any signs of adjustment. The Chinese people can’t enjoy freedom of speech, and they have no access to facts of some momentous social events. Freedom of speech is highly significant for the people in today’s information society. Consequently, the Chinese government must exercise complete freedom of speech.
