Li, Xueliang: Calling the Chinese Society to Open Freedom of Speech
李学良(Li,Xueliang)
Today’s Chinese people do not have freedom of speech; fewer and fewer people would speak the truth. People cannot see different political views, all the articles about dissatisfaction with government and criticism will be blocked and find the accountability. Speech is the bond of human society, without freedom of speech, the society cannot progress and develop. Only with freedom of speech, there would be truth.
On December 10, 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. China is one of the signatories of this programmatic document. The Chinese government also promises to make contributions to build a fair, just, peaceful and prosperous world with the international society. There is a rule in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Everyone has the right to enjoy freedom of speech and expression. This right includes the freedom to hold opinion without interference, and seek, receive and pass freedom information and ideas through media regardless of frontiers.
Opening up freedom of speech is an important condition for China’s political reform. Only people have the right of freedom of speech, can people have the right to talk, can people protect their own interest, can people defend for themselves. And there would be possibilities to reveal the truth of social problems, there would be possibilities to expose government official corruption problem, and there would be possibilities to display social fairness and justice.
