Zhao, Jun: Do not Forget Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989, Promoting Democracy and Freedom
赵君(Zhao,Jun)
Today is an unusual day. 23 years ago, on June 4, 1989, there happened a bloody massacre shocking the whole world on Tiananmen Square in Beijing. Between spring and summer in 1989, many cities, centered with Beijing, happened many long lasting demonstrations and rallies. Students and civilians called on the government to punish corruption, build a society with democracy, freedom and justice, but were bloodily suppressed by the army which was controlled by Chinese Communist Party. Hundreds of thousands people lost their lives, countless others were injured, and more people were arrested and detained. Many people involved in this event were persecuted at different levels. They were hurt both mentally and physically.
It has been 23 years since the Tiananmen Square Massacre first happened. We are still so shocked when thinking about it. We cannot forget Tiananmen Square Massacre since it is hard to let people forget, unless we are really apathetic. Tiananmen Square Massacre is a huge wound in our country and this nation. This wound comes from the contradiction between the social progressive forces in China and Chinese Communist Party’s dictatorship.
We never forget Tiananmen Square Massacre, and only take this event as a review of a historical event, then find the motivation to promote democracy and civilization in Chinese society. The democracy and freedom that event advocates are still our goals today.
