Wu, Yanghuiyu: Chinese Government Should Give the Freedom of Speech back to People

The right of speech, from the one hand, is the freedom for people to publish different views at their will; on the other hand, it is also the right to freely get access to the opinions of others. In democratic countries, the freedom of speech is an absolute thing, that anybody could express themselves freely, which positively affects the procession of promoting democratic freedom and human rights, discovering the truth and boosting people’s participation to politics. The facts show that the freedom of speech helps to protect people’s basic human rights.
The Chinese government strictly limits people’s freedom of speech, and bans people to make comments and to criticize the government; people must follow what the state-controlled media says, or they might get blamed and even held for crime because of their speech.
The freedom of speech is among the scope of basic human rights, Chinese government’s deprivation to people’s right to speech violates the basic rule that human own the freedom of speech, and it tramples on human rights. Therefore, we urge the Chinese government to open the freedom of speech, giving the right of speech back to people.
