Zhang, Shaojie: The “June 4th” Event Aroused Chinese People’s Democratic Consciousness

The democratic movement in 1989 has passed 23 years, at that time, the slogans shouted by the participating students, such as “Fight against official profiteering!”, “Wipe out corruption!”, and “Exercise political reform!”, used to make people’s blood boil, and the event remains fresh in some elders memory. Afterward, in the eve of June 4th every year, many people feel sad and use different methods to commemorate the event.
The patriotic democratic movement, mainly participated by students, has passed 23 years, while the “June 4th” spirit still remains in our deep memory. Then Chinese government finally suppressed the “June 4th” event to gain time and space for corrupt officials, which makes the government even more corrupt and makes the officials disregarding law and principle, running amuck, oppressing the people, having a strong desire of money. Today, the large-scale official corruption spreads to the fields of judicial sector, educational sector, medical sector, in which the officials collude with the businessmen and openly get involved in power-for-money deal; unprecedented unequal distribution emerges in Chinese society, alone with the phenomenon of wide rich-poor gap and gradually shape social contradiction.
The “June 4th” event in 1989 aroused Chinese people’s democratic consciousness, however, after 23 years, the communist government still refuses to exercise political reform, and keeps trampling on human rights and freedom; we Chinese people urge the central government to publicly takes the responsibility of the occurring of the event, establishing a multi-party democratic political system.
