Shi, Caoming: China’s Medical Corruption Can Not Be Ignored

The biggest problem Chinese people are facing is the hardship to receive medical treatment. “The hardship to receive medical treatment, the hardship to afford the expenses of medical treatment” is the primary problem in China’s society. It is a common phenomenon in the medical circle that doctors take discounts, red pockets and commissions, to which many poor patients have deep impression. For example, cold, which is just a small problem, the doctors, however, deliberately prescript many unnecessary medicines, the prices range from a few hundreds to thousands yuan. The current hospitals, no matter ran by the government or private institutions, assign task quota every single doctor, if one could not accomplish the monthly task, he will lose both the bonus and the basic wage.
Besides, if a patient needs hospitalization, enough medical fees are required. When the balance of one patient’s medical expense is low, notification of the hospital will be issued to require quick replenishment, and if a patient cannot afford the expenses due to his poverty, or if he did not made timely replenishment, the hospital will stop the treatment to the patient and even refused to provide medicine or injection. Only in China’s hospitals can you see this inhuman act.
The medical problem closely relates to people’s lives, and the medical corruption in China is an epitome of China’s corruption in other fields. China needs to reform the current social system as well as the whole medical system, and by using the law to punish illegal medical staff. As a doctor, he must establish the concept of “Only medical ethics exist could patients be saved”.
