Wang, dong: No freedom of speech in Chinese society, neither the truth
王栋(Wang,Dong)
It’s very dangerous for citizens if they don’t know the real situation of their country, which just like a blind man on a blind horse. After 30 years of opening and reform in China, the Chinese government controls the public opinions with unprecedented force, especially on network media. Nowadays, the Internet has become an important tool help people communicate and exchange information. However, Chinese government still controls the freedom of the press and publications; and especially uses a strict means to blockage the Internet. These behaviors not only deprive the people’s right to be informed, also block the government’s information channels.
Under the control of local government, the media cannot report the truth of what is really happening in some common events, such as a traffic accident, coalmine accident, food safety issues, and so on. Some citizens have to get the information of such events from out-of-town media. In fact, the free press and speech can be the “detectors” of social disasters and problems, which is very important for the country development. Where things go wrong, there is news.
Government should pay more attention on negative news rather than the positive news. The faster news of social problems comes up, the faster people can find out and know the problems, and the faster the government can solve the problems. Otherwise, without the free press and free publications, people would be kept in dark and never would know the truth. Government officers may believe the “harmony” of society, actually there are problems and scourges everywhere. When the massive events were finally happened, government officials could realize how serious the problems were, but it would be too late. Fact has proved that it’s not possible to find out truth without the freedom of speech.
