Liu, Zhen: The deep reason why Chinese factories do not care Environmental Protection

I have worked in a Chinese battery production factory for many years. The deepest impression is that many kinds of chemical products (solid state or liquid state) are used all the time. During the production, industrial wastewater of each workshop was passed away like ordinary life wastewater without any treatment. No matter daytime or night, a large amount of toxic gases was released into the atmosphere. Nevertheless, from workers, workshop directors to the managers, and even government departments, all the people just care about the battery products, and pursuits of high economic benefit and GDP value. No one ever offered to make investment in environmental protection.
Instead of punishment or closure, the government officials who run the factory indulge such polluting factories. The reason is simple. The officials only care about the production, benefit, and so-called political achievements. Environmental protection, pollution reduction, energy saving, and emission reduction only remain on the paper. No one really forces the implementation of the environmental protections. To such polluting industry, like battery industry, government officials take the “one eye open, one eye closed” attitude.
Chinese government must pay enough attention on environmental protection. On the one hand, we need to strengthen the environmental legislation and supervision; on the other hand, the environmental organizations should have legal supervision and punishment power, to actually implement the work of environmental protection.
