Chen, Ye: Rational Democracy and Patriotic Enthusiasm
陈晔(Chen,Ye)
First, from my personal view of the Japanese government’s action of buying Diaoyu Island and China’s Baodiao movement, I think the Chinese government should defend the territorial integrity. As a Chinese citizen, I have the obligation to support its territorial integrity. I feel sorry for people destroying Japanese products, personal belongs and harming people’s safety in Baodiao movement. As a Chinese, I really love my country. I am so proud of China’s development in all aspects. And whenever people asks me where I am from, I would tell them I come from China—a developing and big country.
Whoever knows the history would know that Chinese people have suffered a lot, especially from the Opium War to the Japanese war of aggression against China. Maybe the history has awakened a lot of Chinese people's patriotism. Meanwhile, some Chinese people would go to extremes because of some undescribed reasons. If the patriotic feeling is over the bottom line, some Chinese would do violent activity, such as the irrational boycott of Japanese goods. Chinese should not do these things, we should maintain our character, then nobody would look down upon us. In America, a country with freedom and democracy, the black civil rights leader Martin Luther – King’s success of leading a non-violent protest movement is the best proof. I appreciate for American government’s help in dealing with Diaoyu Island. But on the issue of territorial integrity and sovereignty, the Chinese people would not compromise.
In the history, Diaoyu Island belongs to China. Any country tries to obtain China’s territory in any form would not be accepted. Any invaded action Chinese people has to fight back, because the occupation of territory is beyond the bottom line of democratic ideals. China has to fight for its dignity!
