The "89 June 4th Student Movement" is by far the largest democratic movement in modern Chinese history.
The demonstrations, initiated by Chinese college students in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, quickly spread to all parts of China. The magnificence shocked the world and lasted for more than two months, almost toppling the dictatorship of the CCP.
After this movement was suppressed by the CCP with the army, hardliners within the CCP rose up, and the reform and opening up policy stagnated.
