杨永清(Yang, Yongqing)
In terms of human rights, Confucianism recognizes human nature, pays attention to human dignity, pays attention to the distinction between righteousness and benefit, and even people-oriented thinking. It provides another basis for argumentation and interpretation in the concept of human rights that is equal and universal, and is in line with human rights requirements and culture. Tradition makes it easier for nationals to identify with each other.
On the democratic front, after the Malaysian founding father Lee Kuan Yew and the last Hong Kong Governor Chris Patten, they thought that Confucianism was a distinctive third thought.
I agree with Lee Kuan Yew that culture has a major impact on the transplanted democracy system, and it cannot be completely westernized. However, he also pointed out that the so-called Confucianism involved in East Asian economic development experience is actually a popular concept such as hard work, obedience, and loyalty. Does not involve Confucianism.
On the contrary, even if PATTEN does not recognize the role of culture, it is contrary to the facts. However, he clearly sees that Confucian tradition has its own spirit of freedom and is definitely not a fig leaf that is often borrowed by authoritarian totalitarianism.
From this point of view, Confucianism not only affirms independent personality, but also recognizes that individuals are closely related to society.
This kind of human nature not only hinders the development of democracy, but also helps build a democratic community that helps each other.
