Fang Hua: The Essence of Democracy is to Protect the Minority
In a democratic society, everyone’s right is being respected and cannot be infringed. Democracy is not a science. The majority’s opinion is not necessary the truth. The truth, at the beginning, often is known by a minority group of people. The exploiter of the civilization is always the minority people. Protecting the minority is good for innovation the improvement of society. even the minority’s opinion is wrong, it means there is a smaller change to do it. thus, the experience and lessons it can provide is more precious. And it is more valuable to the society. The majority protect themselves when they protect the minority. Because even you are in majority for this issue, but in another issue, you may in a minority. Today you are in majority, but tomorrow you may in minority.
In order to avoid the majority to persecute the minority, it is necessary to protect the minority’s benefits. The majority doesn’t need any protections because more people mean more power. The minority cannot persecute them. The minority need to be protected, and the fewest minority is one individual. So to protect the minority’s benefit, is to protect everyone’s benefit. To some extent, the essence of democracy is to protect the minority, but not obey to the majority. It is wrong for the majority to rule the minority, even under the excuse of science or democracy. Under the principle of law, the rights of minority must prior to the rights of majority. The minority’s rights deserve more protection. If they don’t threaten others, even they caused a strong reaction, their rights still need to be protected. In China’s society, people always only care about the majority’s rights but not the minority. It is because China is a tyrannical country. Only by realizing the democracy in China, can all the people’s rights be protected.
