Wang, Yi: Relations of Selfishness & Institutions
Selfishness is an existence according to the objective laws. Humans continuously pursue their needs spiritually and materially. From a broader view point, no matter what need that is, it is the result of human selfishness. All human are selfish, that is nature, and basic instinct. It is the natural reflection of self consciousness.
The selfishness has brought human world endless disasters. Every war, every scheme, all are related to human＇s selfishness. At the mean time, human＇s selfishness accelerates the development of human society. Needs causes competition, competition causes development. Therefore, the human desire has its good and bad, its benefit the society if guided properly and it will cause endless sufferings if going out of control.
Selfishness can be defined at different levels and also be divided into different categories. There are higher ones as well as lower ones; there are good ones so are the evil ones. The higher selfishness is to pursue spiritual and emotional perfect ness, to achieve bigger self accomplishment and sacrifice little ones. Like the good selfishness, it brings positive influence to the human world while satisfying their needs. Otherwise, selfishness are evil and belongs to a lower level.
Since different selfishness has different characters, they contribute differently to the human society. As a result, we will treat them differently, promoting the good ones, and prevent or stop the evil ones. For the ones that cause the serious damages to the society, we should forbid it. This is also the purpose and essence of establishing human social system, to utilize and control the human selfishness, to maximize the positive influence and minimize the negative influence, and to satisfy the needs of people from all social stratums. This is the power to keep improving the social system.
Letting human selfishness out of control, and swell will cause the extinction of human race. It is forbidden. While not admitting human＇s selfishness, or depriving people＇s reasonable needs, or trying to reform human＇s selfishness nature is unrealistic, and should be avoided.
The communism social system requires human to lose selfishness, or to keep only the good selfishness. It is impossible, and also against human nature. Therefore, the communism social system is only a fairy tale. If a nation or the human world pursue communism as its ultimate goal, it will only result a hypercritical society with twisted human nature, and craziness and total deterioration of the human world.
While the western democratic society recognize the objective fact that people are selfish. The western society aims their goad as serving people＇s needs, balancing and controlling the needs of each individual from different social stratums. As a result, it become the most prefect social system in the whole world, and this is also the soul of democracy and freedom.
