Zhang, Renquan: How Were the Chinese Mafia Societies Formed
Historic background of Chin’s prosperity is the reform and open-door policy and the unprecedented social transformation. China put an end to the ear of share everything, which resulted in universal poverty. Some people made fortunes with illegal means. Difference between the rural and urban areas, and that between different trades, are expanding continuously, making a huge gap between the poor and the rich in people’s minds. Such a time setting provides a drive for people with low social status to form crime gangs to make illegal profits. To use a technical term, this is a inferior form of crimes, which is a crime by the inferiors to the superiors due to lack of resource advantages.
A more dangerous tendency is, a more hidden and powerful force emerged behind the Chinese mafias: Official-Bandit Families”, “Official-Bandit Unions”. Mafias and key figures in the organizations are enjoying higher and higher political status, “Shining rings” on their heads are brighter and brighter. They form unlicensed “governments”. There are more organizational cases each passing year. With the popularity of mafias, everybody, from ordinary people to officials or entrepreneurs, when talking about his relations, often mentions: I have connections with both Mr. Black (Mafias) and Mr. White (Officials).
Such is the true reflection of the current Chinese society.
