Tan, Qingwen: Return Human Right to Chinese Farmers
In the preface of documentary literature “Survey on Chinese Farmers”, “the most complete thing we have done in this era is to forget about the living conditions of 900 million Chinese farmers.” They are 2/3 of Chinese population. The reason they are forgotten is very simple. They can’t make their voice heard. There are numerous media in China, but all are strictly controlled by the government.
As we all know, autocratic rulers need to establish a huge lying system, used to cheat and control people. At the same time, the ruler must oversee everything and not to be cheated by its own lies. Carefully produced information are non symmetric, which is the biggest treasure of autocratic ruler.
Obviously, problems of Chinese farmers are first lack of freedom of speech and freedom of media. Without them, it is impossible to solve Chinese farmers’ problems. Chinese people, especially farmers, suffer so much from lack freedom. Because Chinese farmers can not produce their voices, there occurred the disaster in late 1950’s in which dozens of million of people starved to death, and also the dangerous situation during which national economy is on the edge of bankruptcy. Chinese people paid more cost than any other countries but still have not got freedom. For farmers, they have got only status of “stable slaves” and government
policy adjustments. For officials, they are just “let them suppress them with more control”. When these new policies get some effects, some people applaud autocratic government at once, therefore making the evil government excel and prolong.
In China, it is crucial and imminent to promote democratic reforms, of which freedom of speech and media and of organizing societies are the most essential. There is no reason to delay them.
