He, Baoming: Corruption Fills Every Corner in China
Of all memorial archways, the Virginity Archway, which is an archway built for a widow who stayed single for the rest of her live after her husband’s death in ancient China, is unique in China and is an object that persecuted women the most and the longest. It is hard to see one now, especially after the Cultural Revolution in the 1970’s. As a historic product, it is a purposely exemplification of “virginity”, polluting even the word “archway”. A curse is often heard, “in the trade of prostitution and still long for a virginity archway”. As a matter of fact, prostitutes, either in the past or in the present, do not actually mind archways. But there are some people who produce one after another “archways”, wishing to flash their “greatness” among many an archway. As we all know, “advanced figures”, “models”, “heroes”, and other archways are given and pass away every year. They become the government’s “assemble line”. Some are appointed by the authority while others are named according to the ratio assigned by superiors. In the past, some people like them to gain them fame and connections.
