9 Dead as Turkish Airliner Makes Crash Landing at Amsterdam Airport

Victims are transported by emergency services at Schiphol airport after a Turkish Airlines aircraft crashed on landing, 25 Feb 2009

A Turkish Airlines passenger plane has made a crash landing at Amsterdam＇s Schiphol airport.  Authorities say nine people were killed and about 50 others injured - about half of them seriously.

The Boeing 737 jetliner broke into three pieces on impact Wednesday, as it went down about 500 meters short of its intended runway.  The landing occurred in a light fog.  

Dutch television showed the plane on the ground, its tail section broken off.  There was another wide crack in the fuselage behind the cockpit.  Emergency workers pulled the injured from the wreckage, carrying them on stretchers to a long line of waiting ambulances.

The plane departed from Istanbul Wednesday morning.
